How to Get Ready for Your Move-Out Clean

Vacate Cleaning · Wellington · 5 min read

Booking a professional move-out clean takes a huge weight off your shoulders at the end of a tenancy — but a little preparation beforehand helps the clean go faster, costs you less, and gives you the best shot at getting your full bond back. Here's exactly what to do before the cleaners arrive.

1. Move everything out first

The single most useful thing you can do is have the property completely empty. Cleaners can't properly mop a floor, wipe out a cupboard, or vacuum a carpet that's still covered in boxes and furniture. If possible, schedule your clean for after the moving truck has gone — even a few hours' gap makes a big difference. An empty home also means there's nothing of yours that could be damaged or get in the way.

2. Take out all rubbish

Clear bins, leftover food, and any rubbish bags before the clean. Cleaning teams are there to clean, not to haul away skip-loads of waste. If you've got bulky items to dispose of, sort that out separately so the team can get straight into the actual cleaning.

Quick tip: Check the garage, shed, garden, and that one cupboard you always forget. Leftover paint tins, broken furniture, or garden waste are easy to overlook and can hold up your final inspection.

3. Empty the fridge and defrost the freezer

If a fridge or freezer is staying with the property, switch it off and defrost it the night before — leaving the door propped open. A frozen-up freezer can't be cleaned properly, and last-minute defrosting leaves puddles everywhere.

4. Make sure there's power and water

This one catches a lot of people out. A move-out clean needs hot water, working power for vacuums and steam equipment, and lighting to see what's being cleaned. Don't disconnect your utilities until after the clean is done.

5. Point out any problem areas

Know there's a stubborn stain on the carpet, mould in the bathroom, or grease behind the oven? Let your cleaners know up front. It helps them bring the right products and budget enough time, and there are no surprises on the day.

6. Have your entry condition report handy

Your original entry inspection report (or photos from move-in day) is your best friend. It shows the state the property was in when you moved in, which is the standard you're cleaning back to — not "brand new." Anything that's fair wear and tear isn't your responsibility to fix.

7. Arrange access

If you won't be there on the day, sort out a key, lockbox, or building access in advance, and confirm parking. The smoother the team can get in and set up, the quicker the job's done.
