How to Time Your Move-Out Clean and Moving Day
Two big jobs land on the same week at the end of a tenancy: getting everything out, and getting the place clean. Get the order and timing right and the whole thing is painless. Get it wrong and you're vacuuming around boxes at 9pm. Here's the simple way to sequence it.
The golden rule: move first, clean second
A move-out clean can only be done properly in an empty home. Floors, carpets, inside cupboards and skirtings all need clear access. So the order is always: movers clear the property, then the cleaners (or you) come through. Trying to clean around furniture just means doing it twice.
The ideal schedule
- Morning: movers arrive and load up. Do a final sweep of cupboards, the garage and the shed.
- Midday: truck leaves with everything. Property is now empty.
- Afternoon: the clean happens in the empty home.
- Late afternoon: take photos, lock up, and hand back keys.
If your move is large, it's often easier to move out one day and clean the next — just make sure power and water stay connected until the clean is done.
Booking it all in
- Lock in your movers first, since dates fill up fastest.
- Book your clean for the same day (afternoon) or the following morning.
- Confirm your final inspection time so the clean is finished before the property manager arrives.
- Keep utilities connected until everything's done.
